Thomas William Reed YHS 66

Thomas William Reed, 53, a former Washington area restaurant and bar owner who had been a consultant since the mid-1990s, died April 12 [2002] at Virginia Hospital Center-Arlington. He had cancer.

Since 1995, Mr. Reed had been a consultant to Northwestern Mutual Life in McLean. He also operated St. Andrew's Consulting in Northern Virginia, which advised clients on country club renovation projects.

From the 1970s to 1990s, he owned and was affiliated with area eating establishments. He had owned such restaurants as Sarsfields in Washington, three area Pawn Shop restaurants, Mosby's Tavern in Middleburg and the Shady Side restaurant in Galesville. He had served on the board of Middleburg's Red Fox Inn restaurant and had been affiliated with Beowulf in
Washington.

Mr. Reed was born in New Jersey and grew up in Arlington, where he graduated from Yorktown High School in 1966. He attended the University of California at Santa Barbara before returning to Arlington in 1970.

Over the years, he did volunteer fundraising work for what is now Virginia Hospital Center-Arlington, Arlington Optimist Club sports teams, the Washington House retirement home and St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Arlington. He helped organize the first Bartender's Ball in 1979, which raised funds for Children's Hospital.

Mr. Reed, who lived in Arlington, had served on the boards of the Washington Golf and Country Club and Virginia Hospital Center-Arlington. He was a member of the National Restaurant Association.

Survivors include his wife of 25 years, Linda; his parents, Paul and Esther Reed; six children, Christopher YHS 73, Katherine YHS 2000, Allyson YHS 2000, Erin YHS 2001, Hillary and Meghan Reed, all of Arlington; and a sister, Jean Roberts of Phoenix.
