LOTT ALICE , 86, died Wednesday, February. 25, 2009. Alice Katherine Matthews was born in
Tarentum PA, the daughter of the late James and Grace Matthews. She attended Allegheny
College for two years before transferring to Syracuse University where she received a
Masters of Education in 1944. Prior to starting a high school teaching position in NY she
married her high school sweetheart, Lt. Alva Gerald (Gerry) Smith before his overseas Air
Force duty in WWII. Tragically, his plane was shot down over Romania in early 1945. Alice
returned to Syracuse in 1946 and began working towards a PhD in Social Studies while
completing a unique program which prepared women for college administration. Rather than
accepting an offer as Dean of Women at a mid-western college, Alice married Fred E. Lott,
a fellow Syracuse student, in 1948. The couple settled in the Northern Virginia area where
Alice began a 25-year career as a guidance counselor, 20 years of which were at Yorktown
HS in Arlington VA where she was also the Keyette Club sponsor. She was elected as one of
the early presidents of the Arlington Evening Optimists. Alice was an active member of
Walker Chapel Methodist Church and especially enjoyed helping with the yearly Oktoberfest
and with the youth group and their ministers. In 2002 Alice and Fred moved from their home
in McLean VA to the Park Springs retirement community in Stone Mountain GA. Alice loved to
paint in oil with a group of cherished friends. She also dearly loved the evenings spent
with bridge club and theater group friends. She relished travel, both foreign and
domestic, but most of all she loved being with her family and watching her grandchildren
grow into adults. Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Fred Lott; her son and
daughter-in-law, Tim and Marie Lott of Atlanta GA; her grandchildren, Stephen and
Elizabeth Lott; her sister and brother-in-law, Bette and Robert Charlton of Fairfax VA;
her nephews, Robert and James Charlton and their families. In lieu of flowers, memorial
contributions may be made to the Drama or Turban Ministry at Oak Grove Methodist Church,
1722 Oak Grove Road, Decatur GA, 30033. A memorial service will be held at Walker Chapel
Methodist Church in Arlington VA at a later date.while completing a unique program which
